Students demonstrate an understanding of how to plan and build a 3d model out of clay showing a chosen theme. Requirements: Must have a photo of a building you are inspired by to work off of. Must have a theme or story. Must be atlas ten inches in all directions. Options for building: Slab, Coil, wheel thrown parts. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to work with a chosen theme through the creation of a 5 piece set showing unity between pieces.

Project: Create a mug on the wheel or by hand that is also a monster. The mug must be functional. How can you use texture and/or glaze in an interesting way? How can you give your mug personality? What type of monster will you have?

Requirements: Must have a handle Must have a foot Must remember a type of monster DUE: Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the slab building method and how to express a creative theme using the Sgraffito method through the creation of a slab box with a lid and a theme about identity. Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch") is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of color or colors (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching off parts of the layer(s) to create contrasting images, patterns and texture and reveal the clay color underneath. The layer(s) of color can be underglazes or colored slips. Below is an example of one technique and what can be achieved.
Project choice 1: Design your own shoe. Feel free to recreate a shoe that already exists and make it your own. Should be about life size. Choice two: Create a sculpture that has a figure in it. You need to have 3 wheel thrown pieces by the end of the semester. Keep in mind, It takes 2 weeks of practice usually before you are actually able to make anything!
